This book is set during World War II on the Caribbian island of Curacao. The story is told from the perspective of a 12-year-old boy named Phillip, who at first is excited by the news that German submarines have been sighted near the island. Phillip's mother, however, wants to get away from the war and decides to take him with her to America. Only a few days into the voyage, their ship falls victim to a torpedo and is sunk. Phillip goes blind from injuries he suffers during the attack, but is saved by a West Indian man named Timothy. The two land on a small island (or cay) and must learn how to survive as the hope of being rescued fades.
The novel explores the themes of race, survival, and hope.
