Math
Our adopted math text is Everyday Mathematics, 3rd Edition.
On most days students will complete math boxes and a study/skills link for the current lesson (see definitions below). Additional work may be assigned as well. Please check the daily agenda to see a list of today's math assignments. All math assignments are due at the beginning of class and must be accompanied by all student work. Periodic skills quizzes will also be given.
Facts Practice
One of the most important skills students will need for fifth grade math is automatic recall of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. I strongly encourage all students to practice math facts at home for at least 5 minutes each night. Our class will be charting progress as we take Facts Master practice tests each week, with the goal of correctly answering all 300 problems in under 10 minutes. Visit our Facts Master page to learn more.
Accelerated Math
All fifth grade students will be participating in the Accelerated Math program this year. Students who have an avid interest in math may enroll in the sixth grade Accelerated Math course. All other students will be enrolled in the fifth grade course. Completion of the sixth grade course is required to qualify for the sixth grade Pre-Algebra placement test. To grade Accelerated Math assignments online, print new assignments, and view score reports, login to Renaissance Place.

- Skills Links - Independent practice pages used to reinforce ongoing arithmetic skills. Skills Links are assigned periodically.
- Math Boxes - Found in the Student Math Journal, usually at the end of each lesson. Math Boxes review skills and concepts from throughout the year, and are key to helping students maintain regular use of essential skills. Math Boxes are assigned with each lesson and are graded/reviewed together as a class.
- Student Reference Book (SRB) - This is a reference textbook that can be used to find brief explanations of mathematical concepts, algorithms, and definitions.
